Importance Of SEO In The Categories Of A Blog

The categories have tremendous importance in the positioning of a blog. We are talking about sections or sections in which hundreds or thousands of entries can be included. And, generally, they are pages that many blogs and web pages do not pay much attention to. What should be done then to improve the SEO of the categories and get them positioned?

There are many tips and techniques that we can put into practice to improve the SEO of the categories of a blog. Categories that, by the way, should not be confused with the tags that we also include in the posts. In this post, we will give you a small list of tips that will help you improve the SEO of your categories.

Tips to improve the SEO of categories

Most of the blogs that we have to give us the opportunity to categorize or compartmentalize the entries that we are going to publish. The keyword we choose for each of these categories is very important.

We advise you to take into account the following elements.

How to Improve your CTR with SEO techniques

1. Don’t choose too many categories

It makes no sense to try to have a very high number of categories, as if they were labels, since what it is about is to integrate entries, the more the better, in the categories, so that they are not too scattered. 5, 6 or 7 at most would be the most suitable for a blog.

2. Put the name of a keyword to each category

Needless to say, the categories should correspond to keywords that interest us. We must avoid generic names that do not contribute anything, such as “News”, “General”, “Various” and similar catch-alls.

3. Ideally, the category should be a set of 2, 3, or 4 keywords

For example, if we’re blogging about making money online, it wouldn’t make sense to put a one-word category: “money” or “savings,” for example. On the other hand, it would be more interesting to include words like “earn money selling products” or “earn money writing”, and include all the articles related to the corresponding topic.

4. Optimize categories

Blogs often choose only category names that interest them and then do nothing to rank them. But there are many things you can do.

  • Create a description of the category, a text that includes the most important related keywords.
  • Create a meta-description of it, which will appear in Google search results.
  • Optimize the title, eliminating words that come by default, such as “Category:”, or things like that.

5. Choose categories with highly searched keywords

In relation to what we mentioned before, the categories should correspond to keywords. But it would also be important that they were important keywords, that they included at least 4,000-5,000 monthly searches for Spain.

It does not make much sense, for example, that we make a category for a keyword that has 10 monthly searches since it would not have much travel. It would make more sense to make a single post about that keyword.

6. Look for a good design for the category page

Be careful and pay attention: category pages are the ones that generally have a lower bounce rate. And this is for a simple reason: we have grouped a wide set of posts on a single page and they all deal with the same sub-topic, so it is a type of landing page that adds a lot of value to the reader and gives them many opportunities to stay.

Do you understand now why it doesn’t make sense to make a category page if we are only going to put 1 entry later?

7. Do not put entries in several categories

To avoid the risk of Google detecting these pages or content as duplicate content, ideally, you should put each entry in a single category and that has to do with the topic of the entry. Do not put an entry in several categories, even if it has to do with several topics.

8. Do not create categories and tags with the same name

If you look closely, it doesn’t make much sense that a category, which encompasses much more than a tag, then has the same name as a tag. The tags should be focused on the subtopics or main keywords within a category, but they should never match the keyword that we have chosen for the category page.

9. Allow category indexing

Some people consider that category pages are not important, so they do not indicate in the robots.txt file that they should not be indexed, so when Google crawls it, it decides not to include them in searches. This is clearly a mistake since each category page can become a very important landing page within your blog or website.
